I Was Lost, Depressed, and Hopeless

I was in the middle of the darkest time of my life. I felt abandoned. I was depressed. I was a college dropout with no direction and no real purpose.

And that’s when it happened. My coworker at the bank I was working at invited me to his church. He and I had been talking about church stuff as I had just started attending church for the first time in my life.

After attending his church a couple times, I knew I was home. It was at this church where I learned about the God I always hoped existed. Every Sunday, I was taking notes during the sermon, learning as much as I could.

Everything began to change.

My weekly nourishment via biblical, Christ-centered preaching began to chip away at my hard heart. God was working in me and on me.

Preaching is a huge part of my story.

It was in response to a Sunday sermon at a business conference (odd combination, I know) that I surrendered to Christ.

By the time of me receiving the call from God to enter into vocational ministry, I was attending both Sunday services and taking voracious notes from the sermon during both.

I’m passionate about preaching because I’m passionate about the gospel. I believe that God can use Christ-centered, passionate preaching to shake people’s hearts. I believe that something special happens in the sermon as the Holy Spirit begins to tug and pull at people’s hearts.

Pastor, what you do matters. The weight of preaching, in my opinion, should drive us to a posture of being perpetual students. There is still so much to learn and so much room to improve in our craft of preaching.
