People love to tell you that preaching is irrelevant in this day and age. “People just do not submit to that kind of authority anymore” or “no one has that kind of attention span anymore” or “that just is not the best way to communicate in this day and age” are common protests I hear against the traditional form of preaching.
But contrary to the above thinking good preaching does remain important. In fact preaching remains as important as it has ever been.
Here are three reasons why:
A Vast Amount of Misinformation is Available
Good, solid, and Biblical preaching is as important as ever because a huge amount of bad and heretical teaching is easily accessible to everybody today. All they have to do is get on their phone and they can find any ideology out there all wrapped up nice and neat to seem true. This is a problem we can combat with biblical preaching. You see, even your most committed members are going to run into shaky theological teachings out in the world. We must be ready for that.
With Many Things Today Taking People’s Time You Can Have Their Attention
For that half hour to forty five minuets on Sunday morning or Saturday evening or whenever you gather you have the attention of the audience. Now it might not be as laser focused as it has been in the past with a large amount of people having phones and tablets. But, you still have that time to communicate the Gospel and if you preach engaging and well you are going to win their attention for that time frame. Which is so valuable in this fast paced world.
An Amazing Opportunity Exists to Take the Sermon Past Sunday
Many bemoan the growing challenges of the Sunday morning sermon because of modern distractions and modern technology. But you can actually put these things to work for you in taking the sermon past Sunday. You can tweet out, Instagram, or Facebook important highlights from the sermons. You can go deeper in a blog post or podcast. You can further the study in sermon based small groups. There are many things you can do to make the sermon a living and breathing thing beyond Sunday morning.
