3 Things to Remember During Advent

As a pastor Advent is an exciting and stressful time for me. On one hand many more people are open to the church and what it means and on the other hand there is all the challenges and expectations that come along with the Christmas “season”.

I want to provide you with three things that all pastors and preachers need to remember during this time of Advent. No matter if you tie directly into the liturgical calendar, you do not observe it at all, or anyone else in between.

You Get to Preach the Birth of the Savior!

Do not forgot during the hustle and bustle of this season what it means for the church: celebrating the birth of Jesus. There is hardly anymore exciting news that you can share with your congregation and your community! Remember this in your preaching. Remember the profoundness and ultimate impact of a baby’s birth in the little town of Bethlehem. Convey to your people the world and life-changing impact of this historical account.

The Holidays Are Not a Happy Time for Everyone

As you are sharing in your preaching, pastorally, and personally remember that this season is not the most joyful time for everyone. Maybe they are struggling with loss. Maybe they are struggling with depression, or divorce, or distance in their relationships. Be careful and compassionate when dealing with people around Christmas.

You Will Have Visitors Exploring Faith and Spirituality

One of the most exciting and stressful parts of this season for churches is visitors! Do you have a plan to engage with new people who are going to visit your church during this season? Are you maximizing opportunities to empower your people to invite their neighbors to church? It is so important that your church invite and engage with visitors for the eternal impact of each person who walks through your front door.
